Meet your planner

Brendan has been helping people plan for retirement since 2009.

Retirement planning gets talked about as if it's all products and percentages. It isn't. It's about the life you want when work is behind you - and making sure the money you've put aside is quietly working towards it.

We work across pensions and PRSAs, old schemes that need tidying up, the run-in to retirement, ARFs and annuities, the State Pension, and tax-efficient drawdown - and we work alongside your accountant when that's the right call.

The first conversation is free, and there's no obligation. Bring the questions, the half-questions, and the pension statements you've been meaning to open.

01
Building the pot

Pensions & PRSAs

Whether you're starting your first pension or adding to one you already have, we help you get the structure right - PRSA, occupational scheme, or personal pension - and make the most of the tax relief on your contributions. The goal is simple: put money to work now so future-you has choices.

02
Tidying up

Consolidating old pensions

Most people pick up a pension or two along the way - an old job here, a scheme there. We track them down, compare what they're really costing you, and where it makes sense, bring them together so the whole picture is easier to see and manage.

03
The run-in

Approaching retirement

The last few years before you finish work are the ones that matter most. We map what you'll have, when you can access it, and how it all fits together - the lump sum, the income, the timing - so you walk into retirement knowing exactly where you stand.

04
Turning it into income

ARFs vs annuities

At retirement you choose how your pension pays you. An annuity gives you a fixed income for life; an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF) keeps your money invested with the growth potential that brings, while you draw an income from it. Neither is automatically right - we talk you through the trade-offs for your situation.

05
The foundation

The State Pension

The State Pension is the base layer of most Irish retirement plans. We check your PRSI record, work out what you're on track to receive and when, and build the rest of your plan around it - so your own pension does the job it's meant to, rather than duplicating cover you already have.

06
Drawing it down

Tax-efficient drawdown

How and when you take your money makes a real difference to what you keep. We plan the order of drawdown - tax-free lump sum, ARF income, other savings, the State Pension - so you use your allowances well and hold on to more of what you've built.

Common questions

What do people ask about retirement and pensions?

The questions people bring us most often. If yours isn't here, it's exactly the kind of thing to raise on a free call.

All frequently asked questions
  • When should I start a pension in Ireland?

The honest answer is: as early as you comfortably can. The earlier you start, the more time your contributions have to grow, and the less you need to put in each month to reach the same place. That said, it's never too late to start - even in your 40s or 50s a well-structured pension, with its tax relief, can make a meaningful difference. We'll show you what a start looks like from wherever you are today.

  • Can I combine old pensions from previous jobs?

Often, yes. Many people accumulate several pensions across different employers, and bringing them together can make them easier to manage and, in some cases, cheaper to run. But it isn't automatic - some older schemes carry valuable guarantees worth keeping. We review each one on its merits and only recommend consolidating where it genuinely leaves you better off.

  • ARF or annuity - which should I choose at retirement?

It depends on what you want your money to do. An annuity converts your pension into a guaranteed income for life, which suits people who value certainty above all. An Approved Retirement Fund (ARF) keeps your money invested - with the growth potential that brings - while you draw an income from it, and passes to your family on death. Many people use a blend of both. We talk you through the trade-offs for your circumstances before anything is decided.

  • How much is the State Pension and when can I get it?

The State Pension (Contributory) is €299.30 a week at the full rate in 2026, paid from age 66 (or later, at a higher rate, if you defer up to 70) and based on your PRSI record over your working life. It forms the base of most retirement plans, but at about €15,600 a year it isn't enough on its own for most people to maintain their lifestyle - which is exactly why a private pension alongside it matters. We check your record and factor the State Pension into your wider plan.

  • What tax relief do I get on pension contributions?

You can claim income tax relief on personal pension contributions at your marginal rate - up to 40% for higher-rate taxpayers - within age-related limits: 15% of earnings under 30, 20% in your 30s, 25% in your 40s, 30% from 50, 35% from 55 and 40% from 60, on earnings up to €115,000. It's one of the most valuable reliefs available in Ireland, and making the most of it is a core part of how we plan your contributions.

  • How much of my pension can I take tax-free at retirement?

Up to 25% of the fund, with the first €200,000 of lump sums across all your pensions tax-free and the next slice up to €500,000 taxed at the standard 20% rate. Separately, the Standard Fund Threshold caps the total pension you can build with tax relief: €2.2 million in 2026, rising by €200,000 a year to €2.8 million in 2029. Anything above it is taxed at 40% on top of normal income tax when you draw it, so for larger funds the timing of retirement and the order of drawdown need planning several years out.

  • What is auto-enrolment, and does it replace a private pension?

Auto-enrolment (MyFutureFund) started on 1 January 2026. Employees aged between 23 and 60 earning €20,000 or more who are not already in a workplace pension are enrolled automatically: you and your employer each pay 1.5% of salary in the first years, rising in steps to 6% by year ten, and the State adds €1 for every €3 you put in, with employer and State contributions capped at €80,000 of salary. It is a floor, not a plan: there is no tax relief in the usual sense, the fund choice is limited, and 1.5% of salary will not fund most people's retirement. If you are enrolled, we look at whether a PRSA or occupational scheme alongside it, or instead of it, leaves you better off.

  • Are you tied to any pension or investment provider?

No. Eolas Money is independent and fee-based. We aren't owned by, or tied to, any pension or investment company, so our advice is about what fits your plan - not about selling a particular product. You'll always know what you're paying us and why.

Figures checked on 5 September 2026 against Citizens Information (State Pension), Revenue (pension relief limits), Citizens Information (pension tax relief) and Citizens Information (auto-enrolment). Rules and rates change each Budget; confirm the current figure before acting on it.
