What you're entitled to
Two weeks' pay for every year of service, plus one extra week, with weekly pay capped at €600. Statutory redundancy is tax-free - we make sure it's been calculated correctly.
One-to-one consultations with Jim Stapleton to work out your tax-free entitlements, weigh the pension trade-offs, and tell you exactly what's going to land in your account.
Your redundancy entitlements depend on your age, the length of your reckonable service, the insurable status of your job, and a stack of tax rules that genuinely do change. It rarely makes sense to figure it all out alone, especially when there's a pension lump sum in the mix.
As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and a Tax Institute member, Jim runs through every exemption option and the pension implications side by side - so the decision you make is the one that suits your circumstances, not someone else's.
Most consultations happen online, take about an hour, and end with a written summary you can act on.

There's a lifetime tax-free cap of €200,000 on ex-gratia termination payments. We calculate all three exemption methods and claim the one that leaves you with the most.
You may be asked to waive the right to a future tax-free pension lump sum to boost your exemption. The maths can favour it - or seriously not. We make sure you know which.
A clear, written summary of your gross payment, your tax-free portion, the income tax & USC due, and the net figure you can plan around.
Revenue allows three different methods of working out the tax-free portion of an ex-gratia termination payment. You're entitled to claim the highest of the three.
€10,160 plus €765 for each completed year of service. Your entitlement to this exemption can be reduced if you've already received a termination payment from the same or an associated employer.
The Basic Exemption plus an extra €10,000, less the current actuarial value of any tax-free amount you could draw from your company pension. Limited if you've claimed more than the Basic Exemption in the last ten years.
A more involved calculation that tends to favour clients with longer service and higher salaries. We work this one out for you alongside Options 1 and 2 and tell you which gives the best result.

A note on scope. Eolas Money are not legal advisors. Our advice on a redundancy consultation extends only to the financial and taxation review of your termination package - your solicitor remains the right person for the legal side of the agreement.

Two weeks' pay for every year of service plus one extra week, with weekly pay capped at €600 (2026), once you have at least two years (104 weeks) with the employer. Someone with ten years' service earning €800 a week gets 21 weeks at the capped €600, which is €12,600. Statutory redundancy is completely tax-free and does not use up any of your other exemptions.
Anything your employer pays above the statutory amount (an ex gratia payment) is tax-free up to the higher of three limits. The Basic Exemption is €10,160 plus €765 for each complete year of service, so €25,460 after twenty years. The Increased Exemption adds €10,000 to that if you have not used it in the last ten years and either have no pension lump sum coming or give it up. The SCSB (Standard Capital Superannuation Benefit) is one-fifteenth of your average pay over the last three years, multiplied by your years of service, less any tax-free pension lump sum, and usually wins for long-serving, higher-paid staff. All three share a lifetime cap of €200,000. We calculate each one before you sign anything.
Only if the numbers say so, and often they don't. Waiving your right to a tax-free pension lump sum raises the Increased Exemption and the SCSB now, but the pension lump sum you give up may be worth far more at retirement, and the decision is irreversible. The right answer depends on your years of service, the size of the ex gratia payment and how big the pension lump sum would have been. This is exactly the calculation the redundancy consultation is for.
Yes, and it is often the most tax-efficient home for the taxable part of the payment. Personal pension contributions attract income tax relief at your marginal rate within age-related limits: 15% of earnings under 30, 20% in your 30s, 25% in your 40s, 30% from 50, 35% from 55 and 40% from 60, on earnings up to €115,000. A contribution made before the end of the tax year, or by the following October against the previous year, can turn a payment taxed at 40% into retirement savings that grow tax-free.
