Planning for older age.

Helping clients - and the families around them - make considered decisions about care, capacity, and what gets passed on. In plain English, at the pace that suits you.

Meet your planner

Brendan has been guiding Tipperary families through later-life decisions since 2009.

These conversations rarely happen at the easiest time. A parent has had a fall, a diagnosis has landed, or the family has finally decided to get ahead of things. Whichever it is, the goal is the same - clarity, calm, and a plan that everyone understands.

We work across the Fair Deal Scheme, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Assisted Decision Making, and inheritance tax - and we work alongside your solicitor and accountant when that's the right call.

The first conversation is free, and there's no obligation. Come in with the questions, the half-questions, and the things you weren't quite sure how to ask.

How we can help

What does planning for older age involve?

In helping our clients and their families plan for older age, we provide guidance & assistance with the following areas.

The Fair Deal scheme: what you pay towards nursing home care
  • 80% of your income goes towards the cost of your care
  • 7.5% of your assets, each year your home is only counted for the first three years

Figures for 2026. The first €36,000 of your assets (€72,000 for a couple) is not counted.

Care funding

The Fair Deal Scheme

The Nursing Home Support Scheme - administered by the HSE - works out what the family contributes towards long-term residential care, based on income and assets. We help you understand what the scheme will and won't cover, and how to organise things in advance.

Capacity & consent

Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015

Signed into law in December 2015, the Act changes how decisions can be supported for people whose capacity may be in question. We talk you through what it means for your family - including who can be appointed, and when.

Future decisions

An Enduring Power of Attorney

An EPA lets someone you trust make personal-care and financial decisions on your behalf if you're no longer able to. It only takes effect when needed - and it's far easier to put in place while it isn't.

Passing it on

Inheritance Tax planning

Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) applies to gifts and inheritances above set thresholds, which depend on the relationship between giver and receiver. We help you understand the three groups, the reliefs available, and the practical things you can do now.

How we work

How does a later-life planning conversation work?

  1. 01

    Have the conversation

A free, no-pressure chat about what's on your mind - for you, a parent, or the wider family. No paperwork yet.

  2. 02

    Map what's already there

We pull together the picture: pensions, savings, the home, existing wills, EPAs, anything that's been started.

  3. 03

    Put the gaps in order

Some things need doing now, some can wait. We give you a clear order of play so nothing important is left to chance.

  4. 04

    Stay in touch

Circumstances change. We're here to revisit decisions as the years go on - quietly, and only when needed.

Common questions

The things people ask about later life.

Anything not covered here? The 30-minute discovery call is the right place to ask - bring the awkward ones too.

How much does the Fair Deal scheme cost?

Under Fair Deal you contribute 80% of your income and 7.5% of the value of your assets each year towards nursing home care, and the HSE pays the balance. The first €36,000 of assets (€72,000 for a couple) is not counted. Your home is only assessed for the first three years in care, the 'three-year cap', so the most it can contribute is 22.5% of its value (11.25% for a couple). The contribution based on property can be deferred through the optional Nursing Home Loan and repaid to Revenue from the estate after death, so nobody has to sell the house to fund care.

What is an Enduring Power of Attorney, and when does it take effect?

An Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) lets you choose, while you have capacity, who will make decisions about your property, money and personal welfare if you later cannot. Since 26 April 2023 EPAs are made and registered with the Decision Support Service under the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, and must be registered within three months of being signed. It only comes into force when the Decision Support Service is notified that you have lost capacity. Without one, your family may need a court application before they can act for you, so it belongs in every later-life plan, not just the ones with complicated finances.

Can I defer the State Pension, and is it worth it?

Yes. Since 2024 you can draw the State Pension (Contributory) at any age from 66 to 70, and the weekly rate rises for each year you wait: in 2026 the full rate is €299.30 a week at 66 and higher at each later age. Deferring can also let you keep paying PRSI to fill gaps in your record. Whether it is worth it depends on your health, whether you are still earning, and what other income you have in those years. We run the numbers both ways before you decide.

How much do I have to draw from my ARF each year?

Revenue assumes a minimum withdrawal of 4% a year from 61 to 70, 5% a year from 71, and 6% if the fund is over €2 million, and taxes you on that amount as income whether or not you actually take it. This 'imputed distribution' is why an Approved Retirement Fund cannot simply be left to grow untouched in later life. Drawing at least the minimum, and timing it alongside the State Pension and any other income, is part of keeping your tax bill down and your fund lasting.

Figures checked on 5 September 2026 against Citizens Information (Fair Deal), Decision Support Service, Citizens Information (State Pension) and Revenue Pensions Manual. Rules and rates change each Budget; confirm the current figure before acting on it.
